Ginseng review:
Granddaddy of the Phytoandrogrens

This ginseng review talks about my experiences with this amazing root. Because the stuff I bought impacted me so much, I've played with it several times. Mostly to good effect. I cover the basic science of ginseng here.

The short version is that ginseng has a wide body of animal and human data backing it up as an aphrodesiac and erectile enhancer. The *major* positive about ginseng is that long-term safety has been evaluated (although not as rigorously as I would like), and ongoing supplementation doesn't appear to cause much in the way of problems for older men (1), although with 6 million Americans supplementing, a list of side effects has been reported (2).

Ginseng Review: The Basics
Like all supplements in this review series, I ordered ginseng from amazon.com and took two pills per day wednesday through saturday. Like all other supplements in this series, I noticed nothing special in terms of my body functions. So as far as my experience is concerned, I saw no negative effects in the short term.

Ginseng Review: Results
I'm going to attempt not to give away too much information about my personal life here. I'm 32, and I live with my girlfriend. We work pretty hard during the week, so we mostly like to get it on during the weekends. As soon as I started taking ginseng, I noticed more frequent sexual thoughts than normal. I also noticed that I was getting a some wood in all kinds of places I wasn't expecting to, like waiting at traffic light.

When it got time to actually have sex, I was amazed. For one thing, I felt unusually strong desire to have sex. And not just have sex, I wanted to tear my girl apart. Second, my erections were incredibly hard. Much stronger than normal. And finally, I had all kinds of staying power all weekend long.

The one downside I experienced with ginseng was that after the third time I used it (within 2 months), I noticed much less intensity than I had previously. I've seen reports about supplement desensitization elsewhere, too. So if you move into the "special weekend" model of ginseng use, I might suggest switching over to maca now and then too.

The bottom line of this ginseng review is that this supplement remains my top choice for enhancement of sexual function. I'll probably revisit this one when I get older as a full-time supplement.

This ginseng review is just a small part of my grand experiement surveying common phytoandrogrens.
